DESCRIPTION
The FBI's Firearms Identification Unit specializes in identifying firearms based on bullets and cartridge cases from crime scenes. In a case study, an examiner evaluates a bullet and cartridge case, and examines a suspect weapon for fingerprints. After test-firing the weapon, he compares the markings on test bullets and cartridge cases with evidence from the crime scene using a comparison microscope. Unique striations and impressions confirm the weapon's involvement. The unit also analyzes other evidence, like shattered windshields and powder residues, to reconstruct crime circumstances. The findings can be presented in court as expert testimony, and the unit provides these services free to law enforcement agencies.
