DESCRIPTION
This documentary follows the strategic efforts of Levi Strauss & Co. in 1980–1981 to diversify its product offerings beyond its core blue jeans, which faced a saturated market. Seeking to expand into more formal and lucrative segments, the company launched "Levi’s Tailored Classics," a line of wool-blend men’s suits and separates. The project, led by Peter Haas Jr. and Steve Goldstein, relied heavily on consumer segmentation research to target the "classic independent" man. However, the team faced significant hurdles, including skepticism from retailers and consumers who struggled to reconcile the high-end tailored clothing with the brand's long-standing reputation for casual, rugged workwear. Despite aggressive sales tactics, price adjustments, and creative marketing attempts, the line struggled to meet sales goals, illustrating the immense difficulty a legacy brand faces when attempting to pivot its established identity in the competitive apparel industry.
