DESCRIPTION
On April 9, 1963, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed Sir Winston Churchill an honorary citizen of the United States in a historic ceremony at the White House. The event was broadcast live via a relay communication satellite, allowing Churchill to witness the proceedings from his home in London. The satellite, built by RCA for NASA, had been operational for five months, facilitating various communications between the U.S. and Europe. During the ceremony, Kennedy highlighted Churchill's contributions to freedom and democracy, marking a unique moment in U.S. history as it was the first time Congress authorized such an honor for a foreign citizen.
