DESCRIPTION
In the early 1800s, pioneer families worked together on farms, learning essential agricultural skills from a young age. Children helped with chores, such as gathering eggs and feeding animals. Farmers used oxen for plowing fields, preparing the soil for crucial crops like wheat and flax. After planting, they harvested grain using a cradle and flailed it to separate the kernels from the stems. The grain was then ground into flour, which was used for baking bread. As communities grew, mills were established to ease the labor of grinding grain. Flax was processed for linen and oil, with detailed methods for extracting fibers and seeds. The successful harvests ensured food supply for the winter. Keywords pioneers, farming, agriculture, wheat, flax, oxen, plowing, harvesting, milling, linen, community, 1800s
